Maryland Water Polo Finishes Fourth in Eastern Championship

April 27, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In their fourth meeting this season, the Maryland women's water polo team fell, 9-2, to No. 20 Princeton in the consolation game of the Eastern Championship Sunday at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

The Terps (22-16) finished in fourth place in the CWPA Eastern Championship, giving them their best finish in the team's short history.

Maryland was helped by goals from Bryndis Klein and Elizabeth Hopkins, but was unable to put a consistent offensive attack together.

Hopkins, who had five goals in the tournament, was named to the Second Team Eastern All-Tournament.

The Terrapins finish the season with not only their best finish in Easterns, but also the team's highest win total.

Only two members of the team, Allie Houseal and Anna Gossett, are seniors, so the young Terps will have high expectations in 2009 after the best season in team history.

In the Eastern Championship game, top-seeded No. 11 Michigan won its third Eastern title, topping No. 14 Hartwick, 10-7. The Wolverines will compete in their third NCAA Championship, in two weeks at Stanford.
