Teams combine for 25 hits in slugfest.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (3-4, 0-0 ACC) won their home opener at Shipley Field today, outslugging the UMBC Retrievers (0-3) in a game that featured 25 hits and 17 runs between the two teams.

A three-run home run by Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference, as the Terps scoring in each of the first six innings after being down an early 5-1.

Maxwell was 2-for-4 with four RBI, which came on the heels of a 2-for-2 performance on Sunday against Binghamton. Jeremy Hunt (Tampa, Fla.) did his share of damage as well, reaching base five times behind an RBI double and three walks.

Relievers Justin Hulse (Rockville, Md.) and Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) bailed out starter Brooks Norris (Baltimore, Md.), who struggled in the first inning. Hulse (1-0) got win after striking out seven in 3.1 innings, while Basinger shut down UMBC for 3.2 innings, allowing no hits.

The appearance was Basinger's second of the season and the 61st of his career, tying him for fifth on the Terps all-time list.

Both teams did most of their respective damage in the opening innings, with Maryland scoring seven runs behind Maxwell's home run and UMBC putting up four runs in the top of the first.

The less-than-desirable field conditions did not affect the Terps in the field, turning three double plays and committing no errors.

Maryland received a scare in the top of ninth, as UMBC, down by two, put two runners in scoring position. But closer Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) came on and struck out the final two batters to record his first save of the season. For the season, Schmoll (1-0) has 14 strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

The team will travel to Richmond, Va. tomorrow to take on Virginia Commonwealth at 4 p.m.
