Terps' late-inning rallies stopped by Kentucky relievers; newcomer Ryan goes 3-4, 2 RBI.

DeLand, Fla. - DeLand, Fla. - The Kentucky Wildcats pitching staff came through late and under pressure, silencing Maryland's bats as the Terps opened the season with a 6-4 loss.

The Wildcats should not expect any valentines from the Terrapins (0-1, 0-0 ACC), who left the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh, proving devastating to a late-inning rally which had seen the Terps come back from down 5-1.

Kentucky reliever Mark Galvin, after giving up an RBI walk to catcher Bobby Ryan (Damascus, Md.), got Brown-transfer Adam Royster (Severna Park, Md.) to ground into a double play up the middle to end the inning and avoid their second come-from-behind loss in as many days.

The Terps had their chances, backing reliever James Rodriguez (1-0) into a two on, no out jam in the sixth, but Rodriguez was able to retire the next three Terp hitters in order.

In the eighth, Daryl Whitmer (Waldork, Md.) scored on a double by Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) and Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the lead to two, but Rodriguez got Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) to ground out to end the inning.

Radford-transfer Ryan led the offense with three hits and two RBI, and Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) and Gemmill had two hits apiece.

Kentucky (1-1, 0-0 SEC) was paced by starter Heath Castle and Rodriguez (1-0), who combined to give up two runs in six innings.

The Wildcats, who had not played the Terps since 1983, showed more poise after blowing a seventh-inning lead to host Stetson on Thursday, keeping Maryland's hitters in check in pressure situations. Despite giving up two runs, Galvin was able to escape further harm, and Matt Scott closed out the game for his first save of the year.

Maryland is now 1-2 under head coach Terry Rupp. After a season-opening loss to James Madison last year, the Terps went on to win a team-record 34 games.

The Terps return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. against No. 18 Stetson for their second game of the Amtrak Invitational.
